And he stretched forth his hand toward his disciples, and said, Behold my mother and my brethren!

Matthew 12:49

I had just finished reading through the Prophets of the Old Testament, and even though I know they speak of many blessings along with telling of God’s judgement - I was a little weary.  I was kind of worn out.  The year 2020 had caught up with me… (These devotions are from our church Bulletin this time a year ago.)

“And walked in the statutes of the heathen…”

2 Kings 17:8

Why did they do this?  Why did they go along with the customs and religion of the heathen people who lived around them?  They were the children of Israel, they knew the Lord.  So why do that rather than obey the Word of God?

Because it was easier, and they liked that lifestyle better!

It was easier.  Well, it was easier, for a while…

Of course, it’s easier to just do whatever we want to do.  Or find things we agree with and go along with them…  Sort of an attitude of “everybody else is doing it”, so it must be okay.

But what does God say?

“Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.”

Proverbs 4:25

Don’t get distracted!  Don’t get side-tracked!  Keep looking straight ahead!  “Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee.”

Whatever it is that God has given you to do – keep doing it!  That is living by faith.  That is being faithful.  And that has all of God’s blessings and takes advantage of His promises!  (Think Hebrews 11 – “The Hall of Faith” chapter in the Bible!)

“I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.”

Matthew 16:18

Isaac Dermout was not born a Baptist, and he never became a Baptist.  He was a Protestant, born on this day in 1777, and eventually becoming chaplain to the King of the Netherlands.  He and Dr. Anne Ypeij, professor of Theology in Gronigen, were commissioned by the king to investigate the Dutch Baptists.

“For my righteousness the LORD hath brought me in to possess this land...”

Deuteronomy 9.4 (-6)

That sounds pretty good!  Basically, “I’ve done the right thing and now God is giving me what I deserve!”  Amen!

But that is only part of the verse... “Speak not thou in thine heart, after that the LORD thy God hath cast them out from before thee, saying, For my righteousness the LORD hath brought me in to possess this land: but for the wickedness of these nations the LORD doth drive them out from before thee.”

“For ye are all the children of God by faith in Christ Jesus.”

Galatians 3:26

The object of our faith matters!

Someone who says that they are a born again Christian is saying that they have put their… “faith in Christ Jesus”.  Not in doing “good” things.  Like, being a good person, going to church, giving money to a church or a charity; or saying a lot of prayers, or praying to Mary, the saints, or beads or icons.

If we put our faith in ANY of that, then Jesus is not “the object” of our faith. The object of our faith matters!

“…which thou knowest not.”

Justdontknow 1.1

When I was reading my Bible the other morning this phrase hit me!  At first, I couldn’t figure out why it stopped me in my tracks, because I know this verse very well.  In fact, most Christians know this verse very well!

Actually, we know the first part of this verse well, but the phrase above we may never even think about.  The verse is Jeremiah 33.3 “Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, “which thou knowest not.

“And he opened his mouth, and taught them, saying...”

Matthew 5.2

What did Jesus actually teach?  If we ask the average person today what they know about the teachings of Jesus Christ they would probably say: "He taught about love and things like the “Golden Rule – ‘Do unto others as you would have them do unto you.’"

But Jesus taught so much more.  Jesus taught many more things that are just as important!

JESUS TAUGHT the truth of God’s love.

“Amnon had a friend…”

2 Samuel 13.3

Be careful being around people who are your age, people who are your “peers”.  Even the secular world is beginning to understand this.  Social pressures from peers have caused a lot of harm for some.  But also, people have a real need for contact and interaction with a range of age groups.  God created families to initially meet this need in our life.  That’s why a godly home is so important!  It sets the foundation for our relationships, and while no family is perfect, God will still help us do the right thing… Not like Amnon…

“backsliding children”

Jeremiah 3:14

Does my grandson need prayer?  In the Bible “backsliding” is a bad thing!

My grandson seems to be “backsliding”.  Should this be a concern?

He’s 6 months old now!

He has started sliding and scooting backwards and sometimes gets himself stuck under the couch a bit!  He thinks it’s the “end of the world”!  Then he squawks and his Mummy or Daddy comes to help him!  Poor little fella!
