“Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil”

Exodus 23:2

Whenever the Bible says something, it will also give us an explanation and an example (or many examples).

The children of Israel had just been delivered from the bondage of Egypt.  And in the verse above God is telling them not to follow a large group of people who are going to do the wrong thing.  So, consider the words “multitude” and “evil”.

In Numbers 11:4 we read, “And the mixt multitude that was among them fell a lusting: and the children of Israel also wept again, and said, Who shall give us flesh to eat?”  A large group of people doubted God’s ability to take care of them.

In Numbers 13:32 ten of the twelve spies “brought up an evil report of the land which they had searched…” this evil report led to many years of sadness.

In the New Testament we read that “the whole multitude of them arose, and led him unto Pilate.” Luke 23:1  A mob of people did the ultimate evil thing leading Jesus to being crucified.

Thou shalt not follow a multitude to do evil

Thank the Lord for the Bible!  And thank the Lord that we live by faith which is clearly based in the Bible not the whims and emotions of mankind.

The truth is, there are a lot of people who need to hear the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ.  Because the Bible says that there are, “Multitudes, multitudes in the valley of decision: for the day of the LORD is near in the valley of decision.” Joel 3:14  May we be a good example of what a born again Christian is, and then may we do everything we can to clearly point people to the peace, rest, and comfort that is available in Jesus Christ our Lord!
