“Now the sons of Issachar were...”

(1 Chronicles 7:1)

What do we know about the “sons of Issachar”?

Actually – for that matter, what do we know about Issachar?

Probably nothing… No, hang on - he was one of Jacob’s sons!

Yep – and that is about all we know.

“Now the sons of Issachar were...”

What do we know about Issachar?  He was the fifth son of Jacob and Leah, and a tribe of Israel bears his name.  He seems to be a quiet achiever.  The Bible simply tells us that he could carry a burden (Genesis 49.14).

As one of the tribes of Israel, these “sons of Issachar”, stood with Deborah and Barak to fight against the Canaanites – not a well-known fact.  Then one of the judges of Israel was of the tribe of Issachar.  And during the kingdom of David they were mentioned, “…the children of Issachar, which were men that had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do; the heads of them were two hundred; and all their brethren were at their commandment.” (1 Chronicles 12:32)

Quiet achievers… Issachar… they are even mentioned in the book of Revelation.  We may not know a lot about these “sons of Issachar”, but we know enough to learn from them – quiet achievers!  May we know the times when we need to be a “quiet achiever” for the cause of Christ.
