“Be not afraid of sudden fear…”

Proverbs 3:25

What does that mean?

“Be not afraid of sudden fear…”

It simply means stop being afraid and anxious about things that surprise us, things that seem like “the end of the world”.

It means we are better off having a fear of God than being afraid of anything in this life – even the unexpected things.  (By the way, this article was in our church bulletin one year ago, in October 2019, before the Australian bushfires… before the Pandemic…)

It has always been sad to me, to visit people in hospital, usually palliative care, who are given medication for anxiety.  They are anxious because their life is coming to an end.  It is sad because these people have not received the Lord Jesus Christ as their Saviour – when they had the chance.  They either refuse all religion, or they are holding on to a religion of good works to save them.  Things that never give real peace.  And now, often because of dementia, it appears to be too late for anything except… anxiety.  Very sad.

Are you saved?  If so, then the above verse as not only a proverb, but also a helpful… command… “Be not afraid of sudden fear…”

Many things will test us, that’s part of being a Christian, but God clearly says, “There hath no temptation taken you but such as is common to man: but God is faithful, who will not suffer you to be tempted above that ye are able; but will with the temptation also make a way to escape, that ye may be able to bear it.”  1 Corinthians 10:13

So, when tempted to fear… “Be not afraid of sudden fear…”
