“atonement”

Romans 5:11

“At one”

We don’t use the word atonement much today, but it is a great Bible word!  An easy way to remember what this word means is the think “at one”… “at-one-ment”.  “And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.” (Romans 5:11)

A while ago a Pastor friend of mine, Greg Albright, noted that this thought of “at-one”, is an old English definition for the word atonement.  What a great picture!

“But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;” (Ephesians 2:13-14)

Because of our sin… we were “far off” from God and separated from Him!  We were like lepers in our sin-sickness.  But Christ came to take our sin on Himself, to offer us forgiveness of our sin and now..?  Now we be made “at one” with God!  No longer “far off”!

The word atonement in our Bible means “to cover” and “to reconcile”.  Thank the Lord that our sins have been covered, buried in the deepest sea, put behind His back – God doesn’t see our sin anyone, Christ washed our sin away!  Now we can be reconciled to God… we can be “at one” with our heavenly Father!

Take a deep breath.  Relax.  Jesus paid it all.  Now, enjoy the fullness of the “at-one-ment” made by the shed blood of that Lamb without blemish! “the precious blood of Christ, as of a lamb without blemish and without spot:” 1 Peter 1:19  Are you enjoying your salvation?  Are you truly saved?
