“that ye may know that ye have eternal life”

1 John 5.13

An older gentleman and I were having a friendly religious banter.  He was very religious, but his church taught that you couldn’t know for sure that you were going to heaven.  I shared the above verse with him, saying that we can know for sure - right now - that we are saved, that we have eternal life, and that we can know that we’re going to heaven.

He said, “You can’t know that.”  And I said, “Yes, the Bible says so.”  Then I said to him, “Do you know you’re married?”  And He looked at me funny, because I knew he was married, and he said, “Of course I’m married.  I’ve been married nearly 60 years.”  I said, “How do you know that you’re married?” “Because I was there.” He said, looking at me like I’d lost my marbles.

So, I very gently said to him, “That’s how I know I’m saved and going to heaven, because I was there when I asked Jesus to save me and He did, simple as that.”

Do you know for sure that you’re on your way to heaven?  If not ask the Lord… He knows, and He will tell you!  “The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:” (Romans 8.16)

“These things have I written unto you that believe on the name of the Son of God; that ye may know that ye have eternal life, and that ye may believe on the name of the Son of God.”  1 John 5:13

Those who have believed to the saving of their soul, may know, and they can just keep right on believing on that name that is above every name. (Hebrews 10.38-39, Philippians 2.9-11)
