“... and chose him five smooth stones out of the brook,”

1 Samuel 17:40

This was David facing Goliath.  He had turned down the offer to use King Saul’s armour and weapons.  Instead, he chose weapons he had tested when he faced a lion and bear protecting his father’s sheep.

Today this world, like King Saul, offers us many “helpful” things.  There are many things we can turn to for help or comfort in difficult times.  But they offer only temporary help and often come with “side effects”.  Christian, when the world turns to leisure and entertainment, food and drink, pleasure and abandonment, wealth and the love of money, we are wise to choose things that have been proven, that have been tested, over and over by the saints of God since the world began, “For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal (physical), but mighty through God (spiritual) to the pulling down of strong holds;” 2 Corinthians 10:4

Our proven weapons include our time with the Bible, prayer, caring for others, our local church, and our daily faith, as well as many others.

We will face our own giants, best to do it with the things we have proven... As we prove and test these spiritual weapons, may we find how truly mighty they are!  And then having tested them on the lions and bears, may we have confidence in Christ to take our slingshot to face the giants!  (Helpful scripture: Romans 12.1-2, Ephesians 6.10-18, Philippians 2.5-13).
