The liberal soul shall be made fat.

“The liberal soul shall be made fat:”

Proverbs 11.25

The word “liberal” is an interesting word for us these days.  We often associate it with one of two things: the more conservative political party here in Australia – the Liberals, or someone who is a bit “too broad” in their views or thinking.

In Proverbs 11.25 the word “liberal” has to do with blessing, like blessing someone with a present.  It is the picture of someone who is kneeling to offer something.  It is speaking of the soul of a person, and that soul’s attitude of being a blessing to others.

The soul’s attitude of kneeling in humility to offer a gift of whatever we can share with others.

“The liberal soul shall be made fat:

and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.”

What we have to offer is irrelevant.  It is the attitude that is important.  It is the attitude of giving of ourselves for the Lord and for others.  Giving in prayer.  Giving in kindness.  Giving in hospitality.  Giving in bearing one another’s burdens.  Giving in our diligence to serve the Lord.  It is simply putting the Lord and others before… ourselves!

Before we know it, we are blessed by the Lord.  We find He is giving so much to us.  Our spiritual cups are full.  Then we find we are surrounded by others who are like us.  Others, whose soul’s attitude is to give of themselves, to pray, to work, and to enjoy living for the Lord.  What a great proverb, what a great promise: “The liberal soul shall be made fat: and he that watereth shall be watered also himself.”
