The Basest of Men

“...the most High ruleth in the kingdom of men, and giveth it to whomsoever he will, and setteth up over it the basest of men. ” - Daniel 4.17

Isn’t that a MOST INTERESTING STATEMENT?!

“...and setteth up over it the basest of men. ”

The word “base” there means “low”.

Well... isn’t that interesting?  God said it.  It’s in the Bible.  It is true.

In my Bible reading recently I came across this verse – the entire chapter is very interesting!  This verse just jumped out at me when I considered the people who think they are running this world.  Whether it is kings, presidents, prime ministers, bankers, religious leaders... God says they are the basest of men. ”

Maybe these “basest of men” will come to the knowledge of the truth... like Nebuchadnezzar, here in the Book of Daniel.  Maybe they will admit their sinfulness, their “baseness”, and call on the name of the Lord for salvation.

If Nebuchadnezzar could and did – and remember he was the first World Ruler, before Darius, Alexander the Great or Julius Caesar – if he could be saved then so could the basest of men” who are in authority today.

As we think about it, remember also to pray!  “I exhort therefore, that, first of all, supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks, be made for all men; For kings, and for all that are in authority; that we may lead a quiet and peaceable life in all godliness and honesty.” (1 Timothy 2.1-2)  Even if they are the basest of men. ”
