Atonement

“atonement” - Romans 5:11

“At one”

An easy way to remember what this word means to us in a practical sense is the think “at one”… “at-one-ment”.  “And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.” (Romans 5:11)

Recently I read an article by Pastor Greg Albright and he made the point of this “at-one-ment”.  It seems that is the old English definition for the word atonement… it’s a great picture!

“But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. For he is our peace, who hath made both one, and hath broken down the middle wall of partition between us;”  (Ephesians 2:13-14)

Because of our sin we were “far off” from God and separated from Him.  We were “at odds” with Him - but because of Christ were can now be made “at one” with God again!

The word atonement in our Bible means “to cover” and “to reconcile”.  Thank the Lord that our sins have been covered, that we can be reconciled to God… we are now “at one”!

May we enjoy the fullness of the “at-one-ment” made by the shed blood of that Lamb without blemish!

Run with patience,

Pastor
