"praise the beauty of holiness"

"praise the beauty of holiness"

The king “appointed singers unto the LORD,

and that should praise the beauty of holiness,

as they went out before the army, and to say,

Praise the LORD; for his mercy endureth for ever.”

2 Chronicles 20.21

“…betimes… shall want.”

Proverbs 13:24-25

There are a few words we never really use the way they are used in the above verses.  So, what do they mean in the verses above, the way we see them in our King James Bible?

“He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes. The righteous eateth to the satisfying of his soul: but the belly of the wicked shall want.” Proverbs 13:24-25

“They smote also the tents of cattle, and carried away sheep and camels in abundance, and returned to Jerusalem.”

2 Chronicles 14:15

“tents of the cattle” ..?  Does that mean cows were in a tent and they were conquered?

I googled “tents and cows” and actually found the image of a cow who somehow got into a tent!  But no, the verse is not saying that the cows were living in the tents!

The context makes it clear:  They conquered the cities and they conquered the nomadic herdsman who took their herds and flocks from place to place and they lived in tents, not their cows.

“to know”

Proverbs 1.2

When I read this the other morning those two words hit me like never before!

“to know”

Years ago, I memorized these verses, and other parts of this chapter have been a blessing, but these two words… they have proven true, and powerful even though they were just “hidden” there in my heart for… how many years?  … about 36 years I think… yes, for about 36 years those two words were just sitting, hidden in my heart.

“I know that my redeemer liveth”

Job 19:25

Job’s friends would never convince Job that he deserved what he was experiencing because of what Job knew!

Job knew he was a sinner in need of redemption, he knew he needed someone to “buy him back”, because he was a slave to sin from birth.

Job knew the One who had bought him back.

“…if Christ be in you…”

Romans 8.10

Is He?

Sadly, some people just do not know!

Yet, it is very simple: Either Christ is in us, or Christ is not in us.  We will know for sure because He will tell us!  “The Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit, that we are the children of God:” verse 16

But now to this thought:  “And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.”

“there hath not failed one word of all his good promise”

(1 Kings 8.56b)

What a verse!

“there hath not failed one word of all his good promise”  Just those few words tie together the entire Bible for us:  From the first words of the Bible,  “In the beginning God created…”, to the last “Amen”there hath not failed one word of all his good promise… (Genesis 1.1, Revelation 22.21).

UNBELIEVABLE!

“Bring me a new cruse...”

2 Kings 2.20

In the Bible a “cruse” is a container.  It was usually made of clay, and it could come in many shapes and sizes.

In the verse above the Prophet Elisha says, “Bring me a new cruse, and put salt therein. And they brought it to him. And he went forth unto the spring of the waters, and cast the salt in there, and said, Thus saith the LORD, I have healed these waters; there shall not be from thence any more death or barren land. So the waters were healed unto this day, according to the saying of Elisha which he spake.”

“I have sinned greatly”

2 Samuel 24:10

This scares me, and it should scare you…

David confesses here that he had sinned, he had “sinned greatly”.  His confession to God is a good example to us.  But this also makes me fear, when I realize that David was about 70 years old when he “sinned greatly”!

A few things come to my mind:

“…the LORD was not able…”

Numbers 14:16

Happy New Year…! …?  “…the LORD was not able…”

Sadly that’s how some people went through last year and are now beginning this year…“…the LORD was not able…”
