“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine; but after their own lusts shall they heap to themselves teachers, having itching ears; And they shall turn away their ears from the truth, and shall be turned unto fables.”

2 Timothy 4:3-4

God gave us the Bible, and it is full of stories.  True stories of God’s love and man’s need for God’s love.  Stories of how sinners came to an understanding of their sin and their need.  Stories of sinners who chose to turn to a loving God in repentance and faith.  It’s the greatest story ever told, because it is the story of our Lord Jesus Christ.

But people get tired of that story.  They get tired of the Bible.

Even if it is the BEST thing for Christians, just like milk is for newborn babies(1 Peter 2.2-3)

People still get tired of the Bible…

Why?  Because the Bible is not only “milk,” but it is also “strong meat”.  Professing Christians struggle with the effort it takes, to chew “strong  meat”.  The effort it takes to “endure sound doctrine”!

So, people want easy stories, fiction, things that are fun, funny, easy… they want… “fables.”

“For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine…

they shall turn away their ears from the truth,

and shall be turned unto fables.”

The word fables here is defined as “a tale, that is, fiction (myth)”. (Strong)

It’s like they’re saying, “Just tell us anything, so long as it’s fun and easy, and we’ll call it our ‘faith tradition’.”

Don’t do that!

Don’t ever do that!  Don’t go there!  Be willing to endure good, solid, Biblical teaching!  Look for the Bible!  Look for clear Bible teaching and preaching.  Listen.  Think it through.  Pray it through.  Avoid all the easy, too emotional, …empty stories… avoid “fables”!
